Climate Justice
As Africa increasingly gets behind the global fight against climate change, an ever growing number of important African figures are supporting Kofi Annan's campaign for Climate Justice.
AE-Africa.com reports that African Nobel Prize winners and musicians are stepping up efforts to spread climate change awareness amongst the African people as the developing world look to cooperate better with the developed world on achieving carbon-cutting goals.
The "Time for Climate Justice" campaign has a free musical petition called "Beds are Burning", behind which stand Youssou N'Dour, Angélique Kidjo and Amadou and Mariam. The petition is aimed at forcing decisive action from world leaders in reversing the effects of climate change.
"Tck Tck Tck-Time for Climate Justice"
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Wangari Maathai and Dr. Samuel Kobia have joined forces in the run-up to the UN Copenhagen summit on climate change. The trio have come out in support of the "Tck Tck Tck-Time for Climate Justice" campaign, which was launched earlier this year by the Global Humanitarian Forum.
The principle behind Climate Justice is that emissions have a price and greenhouse gas emitters must pay. The countries, and peoples, who are suffering the most from the adverse consequences of climate change - both now and in the future - have done the least to cause it.
"The older generation has made a mess..."
The polluting actions of the developed world have had the most devastating effects on the world's less developed countries.
The trio have also called on Africans from all over the continent to act now in order to have their voices heard, encouraging people to visit www.timeforclimatejustice.org and sign up to Climate Justice campaign.
"The older generation has made a mess, bequeathing on the next generation a world that faces a very real and serious threat of extinction: climate change," said Desmond Tutu.
He added, "I support the campaign for Climate Justice and I am pleased to become a Climate Ally. This is your campaign. Join me."
